This is area is one of the best places in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to study geology exposed by floods.The flow over the falls varies, but is usually highest during winter and spring. (KPTV) - A hiker who died after a fall at Angel’s Rest trail has been identified as a 20-year-old from Tualatin. Pass below a rock net where the seasonal Shady Creek Falls splashes down a cliff just west of Multnomah Falls. This high, prominent point offers rangy views to many gorge landmarks that include Beacon Rock, Sand Island and the metro area. This part of the trail has one switchback, and one small flight of a few stairs that blocks the way to wheelchairs beyond the lower falls viewpoint. The Angels Rest Trail climbs 1473' in 2.25 miles to an exposed bluff on the west end of the Columbia River Gorge. From here, the trail is a gently sloped 0.2-mile paved path to the Benson Bridge that was built in 1914 by Simon Benson, one of the builders of the old highway. From the base of the falls, enjoy views of the lower and main tiers of Multnomah Falls and the picturesque span of the Benson Bridge. The trail starts at Mulnomah Falls Lodge, a historic building that served early automobile travelers in 1925. The Angels Rest trailhead is located right off of the Hisoric Columbia River Highway. Take Exit 28 off of I-84 onto the Historic Columbia River Highway. The Angels Rest to Devils Rest Loop Trail is one of the most popular trails in Mount Hood National Forest. The trail starts on the south side of the highway. Drive 2.5 miles east to the parking area along the north side of the highway. Take Exit 28 off of I-84 and turn left onto the Historic Columbia River Highway. The nearest airport is Portland International Airport. Walk south underneath the interstate and railroad tracks to the Multnomah Falls Lodge and Visitor Center. A barbecue is available on site and cycling can be enjoyed within close proximity of the accommodation. If you are afraid of heights, or unsure of your footing, there are still good views from the trailhead and from just below the final, scary bit. The Angels Rest trail also has the distinction of being among the most accessible to Portland, with a trailhead located at a freeway interchange 30. Is it worth it? The 1,600 elevation gain over 2.4 miles to the top of Angels Rest is within reach for most hikers, yet challenging enough to give any hiker a thrill when reaching the rocky, often blustery summit. You’ll be in the trees for about a mile, then pass under some power lines, then up a final, highly exposed ridge (above) to the small, highly exposed summit. The final bit is, like much of the trip, rather steep. Just take the Mitchell Point Exit (#TK) off I-84 eastbound, and park in the lot. Here’s the view east: The view east from Mitchell Point. And while it might not look like it from the road, there is in fact a trail up there. When you’re driving east on I-84, just past Starvation Creek State Park and before coming around that big rock formation a ways before Hood River? That’s Mitchell Point. Your first thought here might be, “Where is Mitchell Point? I don’t know that one.” Well, you do you probably just don’t know its name. This is especially true if you want a view like Angels Rest - maybe better - but can’t even find parking there.
